BMI vs. Body Fat Percentage: What Actually Matters for Health
BMI has been the default measure of healthy weight for decades. It's the number your doctor calculates at every checkup, the metric health insurers use, and the basis for most "ideal weight" charts. But it has real limitations, and body fat percentage tells a different and often more accurate story. When BMI Is Useful vs. When Body Fat Is Better
BMI Works Well For:
- Population-level studies — BMI is an effective tool for tracking obesity trends across large groups. It's cheap, easy to calculate, and correlates reasonably well with health outcomes when applied to thousands of people.
- Initial screening — As a quick flag during a routine physical, BMI identifies people who may need further assessment. A BMI of 35 almost always indicates excess body fat, regardless of muscle mass.
