What Is the Stroop Effect?

The Stroop Effect is one of the most famous phenomena in cognitive psychology. First described by John Ridley Stroop in 1935, it demonstrates the interference that occurs when the brain processes conflicting information. When the word "RED" is printed in blue ink, your brain must suppress the automatic reading response to correctly identify the ink color.

This interference occurs because reading is a highly automated skill for literate adults. You cannot simply "not read" a word โ€” your brain processes the word meaning automatically and involuntarily. When that meaning conflicts with the visual color information, your brain must engage executive control to resolve the conflict, which takes extra time and mental effort.

How This Test Works

The test presents 20 rounds. Each round displays a color word (RED, BLUE, GREEN, or YELLOW) in a randomly assigned ink color that may or may not match the word. Your task is to click the button that matches the ink color of the word as quickly as possible.

Your score is the average response time for correct answers. Faster times indicate stronger cognitive control and processing speed.
