Editorial Standards
ToolCalcs is committed to providing accurate, unbiased, and up-to-date information. This page explains our editorial process, how we source data, and how we handle corrections.
Our Editorial Mission
Financial, health, and tax topics fall into what Google and the broader information community call "Your Money or Your Life" (YMYL) categories — areas where inaccurate information can directly harm people's financial well-being, health, or safety. We take this responsibility seriously.
Our goal is to present information that is:
- Accurate: Sourced from primary, authoritative sources
- Current: Updated when laws, rates, or regulations change
- Complete: Covers the topic sufficiently to be genuinely useful
- Transparent: Shows sources, formulas, and limitations openly
- Balanced: Presents evidence without promoting particular financial products or services

Calculator Formula Standards
Every calculator on ToolCalcs uses established, peer-validated formulas:
- Loan amortization: Standard fixed-payment annuity formula: M = P[r(1+r)^n]/[(1+r)^n-1]
- Compound interest: A = P(1 + r/n)^(nt) — standard compound interest formula
- BMI: WHO standard formula: weight (kg) / height² (m²)
- TDEE/BMR: Mifflin-St Jeor equation — the most validated formula for general populations per NIH research
- Tax calculations: Progressive marginal bracket calculation per IRS published rate schedules
- Mortgage refinance: Standard break-even calculation: closing costs ÷ monthly savings
Formulas are displayed on calculator pages where space allows, and cited in the educational content accompanying each tool.
Update & Review Cycle
We maintain a regular review schedule for time-sensitive content:
- Annual (January): Federal tax brackets, standard deductions, 401(k)/IRA/HSA contribution limits, Social Security wage base, Medicare rates, FICA rates
- Quarterly: Mortgage rate benchmarks, prime rate (for SBA loan calculations), Social Security benefit adjustments
- On regulatory change: Any article affected by new legislation, IRS rulings, or regulatory changes is updated within 30 days of the effective date
Every page displays a "Last updated" date so readers can assess currency.
