Calculating how much paint you need for a room is a straightforward process that saves you from the frustration of running out of paint mid-project or wasting money on extra gallons you will never use. A standard interior door measures approximately 3 feet wide by 7 feet tall, giving it an area of about 21 square feet. A standard window measures approximately 3 feet wide by 5 feet tall, with an area of about 15 square feet. While your actual doors and windows may differ slightly from these averages, using 21 square feet per door and 15 square feet per window provides a reliable estimate for most homes.

After calculating the net wall area, decide how many coats of paint you will apply. Multiply the net area by the number of coats to get the total paintable area. Then divide by the coverage rate listed on your paint can, which is typically 350 to 400 square feet per gallon for smooth walls. Round up to the nearest whole gallon, because paint stores do not sell fractions of gallons for standard sizes. Maintain a wet edge. When rolling paint on a wall, always work from a freshly painted area into the dry area, overlapping the wet edge.
