Understanding Percentages
A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. The word "percent" literally means "per hundred." When we say 25%, we mean 25 out of every 100, which is the same as the fraction 25/100 or the decimal 0.25. Percentages are one of the most practical math concepts because they appear everywhere in daily life: sales tax, discounts, tips, grades, statistics, interest rates, and much more.

Types of Percentage Problems
Find the Percent
"What percent of 80 is 20?" This type asks students to determine the percentage relationship between two numbers. The formula is: Percent = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100. So 20 ÷ 80 = 0.25, and 0.25 × 100 = 25%. This is the foundational percentage skill that all other types build upon.
Percent of a Number
"What is 30% of 150?" This type asks students to find a part given the whole and the percentage. The formula is: Part = (Percent ÷ 100) × Whole. So (30 ÷ 100) × 150 = 45. This skill is used constantly in real life for calculating tips, taxes, and portions.
Percent Change
Percent change measures how much a value has increased or decreased relative to its original value. The formula is: Percent Change = ((New Value − Original Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100. A positive result indicates an increase; a negative result indicates a decrease. This is essential for understanding price changes, population growth, and data trends.
Discounts and Sale Prices
Discount problems combine percentage skills with real-world shopping scenarios. Students calculate the discount amount (original price × discount percentage) and then subtract it from the original price to find the sale price. For example, a $60 item at 20% off: discount = $60 × 0.20 = $12, sale price = $60 − $12 = $48.
Grade-Level Guide
Fifth Grade (Ages 10-11)
Fifth graders are introduced to percentages through connections to fractions and decimals. They learn that 50% = 1/2 = 0.5 and practice converting between these forms. Start with the "Easy" difficulty and "Percent of a Number" type, using friendly percentages like 10%, 25%, 50%, and 100% with whole-number answers.
Sixth Grade (Ages 11-12)

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing part and whole. In "What percent of 80 is 20?", 80 is the whole and 20 is the part. Students sometimes divide in the wrong order.
- Forgetting to multiply by 100. The decimal 0.25 is not the same as 25%. Remember to convert the decimal to a percentage by multiplying by 100.
- Using the wrong base for percent change. Percent change is always calculated relative to the original (starting) value, not the new value.
- Adding percentages incorrectly. A 20% discount followed by another 10% discount is not 30% total. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price.
Tips for Teaching Percentages
- Connect to fractions and decimals. Help students see that 25% = 1/4 = 0.25. Being able to convert fluently between these forms makes percentage problems much easier.
- Use benchmarks. Start with 10% (move the decimal point one place left) and 50% (divide by 2). Other percentages can be built from these: 5% = half of 10%, 15% = 10% + 5%, 25% = half of 50%.
- Practice with real receipts and ads. Have students calculate discounts on actual sale advertisements or compute tax and tip on restaurant receipts.
- Draw bar models. A bar model representing the whole (100%) with a portion shaded helps students visualize the relationship between part, whole, and percent.
