Understanding Cause and Effect

Cause and effect is a core reading comprehension skill that helps students understand why things happen in a text. A cause is the reason something occurs, and an effect is what happens as a result. Recognizing this relationship allows students to follow the logic of both fiction and nonfiction, make predictions, and understand how events in a story or real-world scenario are connected. This skill is tested on virtually every standardized reading assessment from elementary through high school.

These worksheets present short passages followed by questions that ask students to identify either the cause or the effect described in the text. At the easy level, signal words like "because," "so," and "as a result" make the relationship explicit. At harder levels, the cause-and-effect connection may be implied, requiring students to read more carefully and think critically about what they have read.

Signal Words for Cause and Effect

Teaching students to spot these signal words is one of the most effective strategies for improving their ability to identify cause-and-effect relationships. However, students should also understand that many cause-and-effect relationships are stated without signal words, and they must infer the connection from context.
