What Is Protein?

Protein is one of the three macronutrients essential for human life, alongside carbohydrates and fat. It is composed of amino acids, which are the building blocks your body uses to construct and repair tissues, produce enzymes and hormones, support immune function, and maintain healthy skin, hair, and nails. Of the 20 amino acids that make up protein, nine are considered "essential" because your body cannot manufacture them on its own — they must come from food.

When you eat protein-rich foods like chicken, fish, eggs, beans, or tofu, your digestive system breaks the protein down into individual amino acids. How Much Protein Do You Need?

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein is 0.36 grams per pound of body weight (0.8 grams per kilogram). Timing also matters: spreading protein across 4-5 eating occasions and consuming 20-40g within two hours after resistance training can enhance results. Weight Loss
