What Are Even and Odd Numbers?

Even numbers are numbers that can be divided evenly by 2 with no remainder. They end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8. For example, 2, 14, 36, and 100 are all even numbers. Odd numbers are numbers that have a remainder of 1 when divided by 2. They end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9. For example, 1, 7, 23, and 99 are all odd numbers.

Understanding even and odd numbers is a foundational number theory concept that appears throughout mathematics. It connects to skip counting by 2s, pairing objects, division, and later algebraic concepts. Grade-Level Guide

Kindergarten (Ages 5-6)

Three Types of Practice

Classify (Even or Odd?)

Students look at each number and decide whether it is even or odd. This is the most direct way to practice the concept. Students should focus on the ones digit to determine the answer, especially for larger numbers. For example, 74 is even because the ones digit (4) is even, regardless of the tens digit.

Color Even Numbers

Students are given a grid of numbers and must identify and color (or circle) all the even numbers. This type creates a visual pattern that reinforces the concept. When students color the even numbers in a number chart, they can see the alternating pattern of even and odd numbers clearly.

Fill Missing Even/Odd

Students see a sequence of even or odd numbers with some blanks. They must fill in the missing numbers to complete the pattern. This type combines even/odd understanding with skip counting and pattern recognition skills. For example: 2, 4, ___, 8, 10, ___, 14.
