Understanding the Symbols
Greater Than (>)
The greater than symbol points to the right and opens to the left: >. It means the number on the left is larger than the number on the right. For example, 7 > 3 means "seven is greater than three." A helpful trick for young learners is the "alligator mouth" analogy: the alligator always wants to eat the bigger number, so the open side of the symbol faces the larger number.
Less Than (<)
The less than symbol points to the left and opens to the right: <. It means the number on the left is smaller than the number on the right. For example, 4 < 9 means "four is less than nine." Using the alligator analogy, the open mouth still faces the bigger number.
Equals (=)
The equals sign means both numbers have the same value. For example, 5 = 5 means "five equals five." Including equal pairs in practice worksheets helps students recognize that the relationship is not always about one number being bigger than the other.
Grade-Level Guide
Kindergarten (Ages 5-6)
Kindergartners compare single-digit numbers (0-9). They use concrete objects, drawings, and number lines to determine which group has more or fewer. Use the 1-digit setting with 10-15 problems. At this age, the physical comparison symbols are often introduced with visual aids like the alligator mouth.
First Grade (Ages 6-7)

Tips for Teaching Comparing Numbers
- Start with concrete objects. Before using symbols on paper, have students compare groups of objects. "Which pile has more blocks?" builds intuitive number comparison skills.
- Use number lines. A number line makes it visual: numbers further to the right are greater. Have students plot two numbers and determine which is further right.
- Teach the alligator trick. The "hungry alligator" always opens its mouth toward the bigger number. This mnemonic helps students remember which way the symbol points.
- Include equals problems. Many worksheets only include greater than and less than. Including equal pairs teaches students that comparison has three possible outcomes and prevents them from guessing randomly between two symbols.
- Connect to place value. For multi-digit numbers, explicitly teach the left-to-right comparison strategy. This reinforces place value understanding and provides a systematic approach.
