Rounding is a fundamental math skill that helps students estimate and work with numbers more efficiently. How to Round Numbers
The standard rounding rule is simple: look at the digit immediately to the right of the place you are rounding to. If that digit is 5 or greater, round up. If it is 4 or less, round down.
Rounding to the Nearest 10
Look at the ones digit. If it is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, round down (keep the tens digit the same). If it is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, round up (increase the tens digit by 1). Examples: 43 rounds to 40, 67 rounds to 70, 85 rounds to 90, and 120 rounds to 120.
Rounding to the Nearest 100
Look at the tens digit. If it is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, round down. If it is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, round up. Examples: 234 rounds to 200, 678 rounds to 700, and 1,450 rounds to 1,500.
Rounding to the Nearest 1,000
Look at the hundreds digit and apply the same rule. Examples: 2,345 rounds to 2,000, 7,891 rounds to 8,000, and 14,500 rounds to 15,000.

Third Grade (Ages 8-9)
Third graders begin learning to round numbers. Start with rounding two-digit numbers to the nearest 10, which is the simplest application of the rounding rule. - Teach the "5 or more" rule clearly. Many students struggle with numbers that have 5 in the deciding position. Emphasize that 5 always rounds up in standard rounding.
- Connect to estimation. Show students how rounding helps them check their arithmetic. "Is 389 + 412 about 800? Let me round: 400 + 400 = 800. Yes, that makes sense."
- Practice with real-world contexts. Population figures, distances, and prices all provide natural rounding practice. "The city has a population of 47,832. What is that rounded to the nearest thousand?"
- Watch for common errors. Some students round all digits instead of just changing the rounding place and setting everything after it to zero. Others confuse which digit to look at when deciding whether to round up or down.
