Types of Number Patterns

Each number in the sequence is obtained by adding a fixed amount to the previous number. For example: 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, ... (add 4). Students in early grades begin with simple addition patterns like counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s before progressing to less regular intervals.
Subtraction Patterns (Shrinking Patterns)
Each number is obtained by subtracting a fixed amount from the previous number. For example: 50, 44, 38, 32, 26, ... (subtract 6). These patterns count backward and help students understand that subtraction is the inverse of addition. They appear in real-world contexts like countdown timers and decreasing quantities.
Multiplication Patterns (Geometric Patterns)

Mixed Patterns

Grade-Level Guide
First Grade (Ages 6-7)
First graders work with simple addition patterns using small numbers. Use the "Adding" type with "Easy" difficulty. Patterns like 2, 4, 6, 8, ___ and 5, 10, 15, ___, 25 are appropriate. These directly reinforce skip counting skills and help students see the connection between counting and addition.
Second Grade (Ages 7-8)
Second graders extend to both addition and subtraction patterns with numbers up to 100. Use "Mixed" with "Easy" difficulty or "Adding/Subtracting" with "Medium." Students learn to look at the relationship between consecutive numbers to determine the rule.
Third Grade (Ages 8-9)
Third graders work with all three pattern types, including simple multiplication patterns. Use "Mixed" with "Medium" difficulty. Fourth Grade (Ages 9-10)

Tips for Teaching Number Patterns
- Start with physical objects. Use blocks, beads, or other manipulatives to build patterns before working with numbers on paper. Visual and tactile patterns build intuition.
- Teach the "difference" strategy. Show students how to find the difference between consecutive numbers. If all differences are the same, it is an addition or subtraction pattern. If differences grow, it may be a multiplication pattern.
- Use input-output tables. Present patterns as function tables (position → value) to connect pattern recognition with early algebraic thinking.
- Encourage verbal descriptions. Ask students to describe the rule in words before filling in blanks. This develops mathematical communication and deepens understanding.
